So many people have discovered new-found independence by having stairlifts installed in their homes. For a significant number, the installation of stairlifts has meant being able to stay in their own home instead of the upheaval of moving. And stairlifts are certainly cheaper than residential care.
Stairlifts should be seen as a positive step towards improved mobility, and not a sign of frailty or old age. Stairlifts can also reduce your chances of having a fall on the stairs and suffering a broken bone or fracture.
What's more, stairlifts could be cheaper than you think. Means-tested Disabled Facilities Grants can cover the cost, depending on individual circumstances.
If you think your stairs are too narrow or awkward for stairlifts, you may be in for a surprise. Although all stairlifts must fit in with the dimensions of your stairs, there's now more choice than ever. Stairlifts are also a lot quieter and sleeker these days, causing minimum disruption.
Of course, stairlifts, homelifts, platform lifts and disabled lifts all represent a major investment. It pays to try them out and to seek good professional advice before deciding. You can try out a wide range of stairlifts and homelifts at your local Disabled Living Centre.
The other thing to bear in mind before installing stairlifts, homelifts, or any kind of disabled lifts, is that before you make a commitment, an assessment should be carried out by an experienced surveyor to establish the exact requirements and ensure that the correct product is installed
Wheelchair Lifts
Wheelchair lifts can be fitted to stairs in buildings which have much wider access than most homes. These wheelchair lifts allow disabled access in public buildings where it previously wasn't possible, which means wheelchair lifts can bring public places in line with the 2004 Disability Discrimination Act.
Working with architects, Liftable can install wheelchair lifts which meet the appropriate standards and allow wheelchair lifts to remove some of the barriers to disabled users in these areas.  Correctly designed, planned and implemented wheelchair lifts can allow disabled access to old buildings with wide enough stairwells, to places of public interest and wheelchair lifts can also be installed in churches and offices.  Wheelchair lifts can open up a new world to many citizens who wouldn't be able to access such places otherwise.  We can provide wheelchair lifts solutions to fit virtually any building or area.
Homelifts
Also known as through-floor lifts, homelifts can be the ideal solution. If there is not enough room at the top or bottom of the stairs for a stairlift, homelifts are a great idea. Homelifts can go in a ground floor room and travel up through the ceiling to landing or bedroom.
Do seek professional advice and try out homelifts before you buy. In fact, with homelifts it's always a good idea to see them in place before you decide, otherwise it can be hard to imagine how the homelifts will look in your own home.
Homelifts have the option of a drop down seat to travel or can take a wheelchair user in the cab if required.
Platform Lifts
Wheelchair platform lifts are ideal options for physically handicapped and older people for overcoming their physical barriers.
There are several different types of Vertical platform lifts to choose from including short rise step lifts for the home, to the larger Vertical Platform lifts for multiple story buildings.
Short Rise – Step Lifts are designed for a wheelchair user to access different levels either in their own home or a public building. Short Rise Step Lifts can be installed inside or outside of the property.  These wheelchair lifts are often used outside homes to facilitate access up to the door.
Vertical Platform lifts are designed for a wheelchair user and a carer to access different levels and can travel up to 15 metres. Vertical Platform lifts can be installed in their own purpose built enclosure or within a shaftway helping those less able to negotiate different floors. Wheelchair platform lifts are designed for lifting a person vertically from a few inches, up to a maximum height of 15 feet. Only minimum structural changes are required for installing platform lifts. Different types of platform lifts with different features are widely available from experienced manufacturers
Most platform lifts come with multiple features such as the highly sensitive sensor which help prevent damages from obstructions in the lift's path, and platform lifts are also available in different platform sizes. Standard wheelchair platform lifts have a lifting capacity of 750 lb.
At Lift Able, we have a wide range of disabled lifts for home and commercial environments. In particular, we specialise in disabled lifts for public buildings, working closely with architects so that the right disabled lifts are chosen. We're passionate about disabled lifts as a means of removing barriers to access for those less able.
Providing disabled lifts is no longer just the right thing to do. Since the introduction of Part 3 of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) on 1st October 2004, those providing services have to make their building accessible using disabled lifts and other aids to access. So 'reasonable adjustments', which include things like disabled lifts, have become a legal necessity in many cases.
Whatever kind of disabled lifts you may be looking for, Lift Able can help with a whole range of access equipment. Request a brochure today, or call us for expert advice to see how our disabled lifts can quickly make a real difference to your life, or the lives of those around you.
